Week 1

World Building

  • Inside-Out Method - An approach when you have a story premise in mind. You start by thinking of the world's key functions then expand into other elements that affects the main key functions.
  • Out-Inside Method - An approach when you have a general understanding of your world's geography and boundaries. With that idea, you continue working on the details of the world.

Key Elements for World Building

  • Where is the story located?
    • Location - General layout of the world; continents, countries, planets, solar systems.
    • Water - There's no life without water, include sources of water like oceans, rivers, springs, lakes, etc.
    • Landscape - The

  • Who are your world's main inhabitants?
    • Characters - What are their attributes and how do they interact with each other.

  • What is the governing system?
    • Government - How the governments rule their world, what laws rule the land, who creates the laws, how these laws are enforced, 
    • Religion - Most culture practice one or two dominant religions with these religions influencing that area's culture.

  • What social difference exist between people?
    • Divisions - Identify the boundaries between the social class within that culture.
    • Food & Drink - Necessary for survival, it greatly defines the social classes within a culture.
    • Professions - The available professions depend on the type of the fictional world
    • Appearances - The

  • How historical events shaped your world?
    • Traumatic Events - The
    • Power Shift - The

  • What are people's standards of living?
    • Power - Very few 
    • Art & Entertainment - Culture impacts art and entertainment and vice versa. 
    • Relations - Cultures frequently clash and it causes conflict. Think about how the relationship between different cultures in that world.

  • How does the world compare technologically to our own?
    • Technology - The technology depends on the world's fictional system

  • Does magic exist?
    • Magic - Think of a well thought of magic system
