PROJECT

Pre Production
Before working on the vehicle, we were tasked to explore some silhouettes for land, air, and water vehicles.

For this module, I took a while to think of what vehicle I wanted to do. But after discussing with Mr. Kannan, I decided to work on a mountain/cliff climbing vehicle, inspired by off-road cars. For the style, I want it to be inspired from jeeps with mechanical elements and a somewhat futuristic look.

I continued working on some thumbnail sketches for my vehicle, starting by drawing an actual jeep from a reference picture. Then it evolved into several variations from the additional parts or a modification of existing parts. I also explored a mech-like vehicle instead, because something with legs might better traverse harsh terrains than just wheels.

Out of my 20 thumbnail sketches, I chose 10 of my favorite ones and turned them into silhouettes.

I continued by choosing 5 from them and made a value painting to differentiate the light from the dark.

I then finalized the design I wanted, where different components of the previous vehicles that I liked are combined into the vehicle below. Some notable features of the vehicle include rock climbing features from the steel wires and carabiners, steps on the legs so that the rider can easily enter the vehicle, as well as a piston system for the legs to move. I also drew the character who would ride the vehicle for a scale comparison.

REFLECTION

I find drawing vehicles to be quite hard, and now having to make one from scratch was even harder. I prefer drawing more organic things, and something with this much structure was definitely a challenge. Not to mention, the components in the vehicle, although imaginative, must make sense. This adds another layer of challenge for me to think about. I'm glad with the results though as I think it's a cool looking vehicle.
