LECTURE

Lasso Tool - Allows you to draw and pinpoint areas in the document. The lasso tool works better with a graphic tablet as it provides a better flow when making selections.

Pen Tool - Allows you to create paths by adding points on the document. Dragging these points allow you to create curves. Fewer points will result in a smoother path.

Layering - Layers are individual images stacked on top of each other. Adjusting individual layers won't affect other layers in your document.

Digital Imaging -  Students use Adobe Photoshop as a tool for doing digital imaging, compost different images into one final output.

PRATICAL

The second project of this module was to create a digital collage out of pictures chosen by Mr. Fauzi. The components for the collage is only limited to those pictures. Two main compositions; the rule of thirds and golden ratio should be kept in mind while forming the collage.

I used the pen tool to cut most of the pictures given. I also used the marquee tool to turn elements into desired shapes. Additionally, I used the color range select tool to help me remove certain colors which really sped up the process for the texture elements. After cutting these elements, I experimented with several combinations, placement, layering, and compositions until I came up with the following designs:

Fig 2.2 First Composition / Week 3 (13/10/24)

For the first collage, I wanted to use the rule of thirds composition where the main element of the collage is laid out in the middle of the composition. From the given elements, I first came up with an idea to have plants growing out of the typewriter. With the textures given, I thought that I could have the typewriter be set in a post-apocalyptic-like scene where the earth is scorched and left to ashes, and the heavenly bodies turned red.

Fig 2.3 Second Composition / Week 3 (13/10/24)

For the second collage, I tried to fit the elements into a golden ratio composition. Due to the flowy nature of the liquid texture, I used it to fill the outer border of the golden ratio to guide the viewer's eyes. I also laid out the camera at the base of the liquid texture to make it as if its projecting a dynamic scene, with people laid around the camera to watch what was going on. To further accentuate the composition used, I added a blue moon at the end of the golden ratio.

Fig 2.4 Third Composition / Week 3 (13/10/24)

For the third collage, I decided to take a lot more creative liberty and used a combination of compound curve and L-arrangement composition. I wanted to create something wild, where fishes swim in the sky and giant plants grow throughout the cityscape. I also made flowers out of fish tail and eyes that grow on these plants. To accomplish the composition I wanted, I used the buildings to emphasize the L-arrangement composition while the flowy form of the fish and plants help with the compound curve composition.

Based off the feedback given from Mr. Fauzi, the first composition was chosen to be further developed into a proper digital collage by the following week.

REFLECTION

With the limited amount of elements that can be used, creating the collage was definitely a challenge as I really had to try out lots of combinations to make something that looked decent. Trying to make the collage fit a certain composition also took some time to figure out. Despite the challenges, I'm quite satisfied with the results as they looked really unique.
