LECTURE

After Effects - After Effects is a 2.5D animation software used for animation, visual effects, and motion picture compositing. It is usually used in the post-production phase as it has lots of effects that can be used to manipulate imagery. It can also be used for motion graphic animation by manipulating vectors and rasterized art. Layers in Photoshop should be organized for a smoother workflow when importing the elements into After Effects.

TUTORIAL

After Effects - Create a keyframe animation to the layers using Position (P), Scale (S) & Masking Path.

PRACTICAL

This week, we were tasked to try out After Effects and create a simple animation out of a composition that Mr. Fauzi prepared. I first imported the Photoshop file into After Effects and prepared the file to be animated.

As for the elements that can be animated, there wasn't that much, so I only had to animate the fish and the two circles behind the building. For the circles, I animated the position, rotation, and scale, making them bob up and down while growing bigger and rotating. For the position and rotation, I also applied ease in and out so that the animation becomes smoother. For the fish, I changed its positioning every 3 seconds and used the convert vertex tool so that the path it moves in isn't straight, thus making it look more natural. One important thing to note is that the first and last keyframes has to be the same value so the animation can keep looping.

REFLECTION

As I have experience using After Effects before so this exercise was relatively easy. Although an animation is simple, there are ways to refine them and make the movement look smoother and natural.
