LECTURE
Digital Surrealism - While realism is based off ordinary aspects of the world, surrealism is a twist on realism where reality is distorted into dreamlike images, inspired by the subconscious mind. Realism has non-exotic elements while surrealism uses strange images and bizarre juxtaposition. With Photoshop, surrealist images are easier to create as it can be made convincing enough to look real, even when the subject matter is not real.

TUTORIAL
Poster Design - Design poster with provided theme for Digital Imaging. The images elements must be photo realistic, preferably photo taken by yourself.
PRACTICAL
Week 8 / Concept & Sketches
As a joint project with IVN, we were tasked to create a poster design with the theme, "Quote of the Day". For this poster, I chose the quote, "Everything You Can Imagine is Real" by Pablo Picasso. To start of the project, I drew some thumbnail sketches out of the ideas that popped up in my head. After consulting with Mr. Hafiz (IVN), I chose to develop the concept in the second sketch where 'imagination' flows out of a subject.

I then looked for references that could help me with my creative direction. I decided to reference the psychedelic art movement as my main inspiration as it could help me to emphasize the word 'imagine' in my quote.

Following the second sketch, I made several sketches where splashes of color flow out of a subject as seen in the figure below. I also used a photo of an art installation I took as a background for another design. After some feedbacks, I stuck with the initial design with some changes to the typography aspect. In addition, the reality part of the poster will be less saturated while imagination will be vibrant.

Week 9 / Digitization & Revisions
To start the project, I first took several pictures of myself and other things in my room – wall, tile, curtain, slides, and paper – to use as elements and texture.

I then masked myself using the layer mask, and adjusted the curves, hue, and saturation, as well as adding the posterize and gradient map adjustment layer. I also masked the color splash so that it would blend into my neck properly. To see how the color splash is done, click here.

Due to the lack of contrast of the subject and the background, I used a picture of my slides to turn into the background because of its cool texture. I first warp distort it so there is more curvature and then applied a saturation and lightness adjustment as well was adding in a posterize adjustment layer.

For the quote of the poster, I decided to have paper cutouts as a background. Using the same paper, I also used it for a white border around the poster. To see how the quote design is done, click here. In addition, I used three different textures, one for the imagination section, another for the reality section, and another for the whole poster set on the overlay blending mode.

Mr. Fauzi mentioned that it would be better if the text is flowy like the color splash instead of the current version I use. It is also important to highlight the photography more, so some adjustments to the layout is needed.

REFLECTION
The process of creating this poster was fun as I liked how I get to play around with the elements I can find in my room. I really liked the playfulness of the results and the process that goes alongside as well. Although there was a lot of back and forth about how the poster should be designed, the results are satisfying and I got to learn a lot out of the feedbacks too.
