LECTURE

Color Theory - The science and art of using colors. It explains how human perceive color and the messages colors communicate artistically and emotionally.

RGB vs CMYK - RGB is the color model used for screens and displays. The color is created using additive color mixing model, which mixes red, green, and blue light of various intensities. On the other hand, CMYK is the color model for printing. The color is created using subtractive color mixing model, which is created by subtracting cyan, magenta, yellow, and black light.

Color Harmony - The arrangement of colors in design that is perceived to be the most attractive and effective

The Psychology of Color - Colors can provoke specific emotions. Although the perception of color is subjective, they generally evoke emotions that are accepted universally.

TUTORIAL

Double Exposure - Students use specific skillsets from photoshop to blend their portrait with layers of background images.

Tutorial Video: Double Exposure Tutorial

PRACTICAL

This week, we were tasked to create a double exposure artwork with the pictures provided by Mr. Fauzi. We were told to follow the tutorial and make it as similar as possible. In addition, we also had to make our own version using our own portraits.

Double Exposure - Tutorial

Fig 2.1 Elements / Week 7 (10/11/2024)

Following the tutorial, I first masked the subject using the layer mask and adjusted the contrast by using the curves adjustment layer. I also changed the color of the background by sampling the color of the sky in the forest.

Using the clipping mask, I have the forest cover the whole body. To create the double exposure effect, I used the layer mask and revealed some parts of the face.

I added other elements like the clouds and birds. I also applied the levels adjustment layer to the clouds so that it isn't to bright. To finish it off, I applied a gradient map on the whole piece to color it.

Double Exposure - Self Portrait

Fig 2.6 Elements / Week 7 (10/11/2024)

For my own double exposure work, I decided to go with a foggy/eerie forest theme. The approach I took to make this was similar to the previous work. I started by creating a mask layer of myself, used the curves adjustment layer to increase the contrast, and used the hue/saturation adjustment layer to turn the image into black & white.

I continued by making the layer mask for the forest pictures, which was clipped to my portrait. Since it was only visible within the silhouette of my portrait, I duplicated the forest layer and placed it in a layer below my portrait, so that the forest stretches out of my silhouette. For the first forest picture, I made it to so the forest was growing out of my face, which also gave an impression as if my face was stretched to the side. To push the "double exposure" effect, I added another forest picture over my shirt, making it look like a forest was growing out of it.

To complete the piece, I added elements like the clouds and birds around my portrait, also using the levels adjustment layer to lower the brightness of the clouds. Finally, I added a gradient map to color the piece.

I tried applying the noise filter on the final piece and I found that it looked even better. Because I was satisfied, I decided to use the rendition as my final work.

REFLECTION

For this project, I took a lot of time to conceptualize something that would be creative and presentable. I experimented with different elements like stairs, construction sites, and abstract lines. However, since I couldn't get any pictures that would fit the look that I visualized, I went with the direction seen in this current rendition.
