TASK

Illustrated Typography Poster

Week 8 / Research & Sketch

The third task of this module was a joint project from IVN and DPI, where we had to create a typographic poster out of a quote of our choosing, with its essence expressed through creative typography. For this poster, I chose the quote, "Everything you can imagine is real" by Pablo Picasso. I started by sketching out some ideas I had that both uses the techniques taught in class and represent the quote well.

After receiving feedbacks, I went forward to develop the idea in the second sketch. I then looked for references that could help me with my creative direction and decided to reference the psychedelic art movement, particularly to further emphasize the word 'imagine' in my quote.

I continued exploring the idea of colors splashed out of a subject and made the sketches in the figure below. I also used a photo of an art installation I took as a background for another design. After some feedbacks, I stuck with the initial sketch I did but revised the words 'imagine' and 'real'. Each letter in 'imagine' will be made differently (fonts, techniques, etc), while 'real' is moved outside the colors and made to look realistic using the 3D effect.

Week 9 / Digitization

To start the digitization process, I looked for fonts that would fit the psychedelic style for the text in the imagination part of the poster, and fonts that are more blocky for 'the word real'. I found the Hobo Std Font to fit the style I'm looking for and I used it as the main font for the text in the imagination part. I then used Arial Black for 'real' because it has the bold weights I was looking for and it would look good when I turn it 3D.

My initial plan was to make the color splash by using the liquify tool in Photoshop. However, due to the lack of control with liquify, I couldn't get the effect I wanted, even after multiple tries. To get a neater result, I switched to Illustrator, where I traced my sketch and adding minor adjustments for each shapes. I also applied the roughen effect so that each layer of colors could slightly bleed into each other.

For 'imagine', I used multiple sans serif fonts and applied effects for some of the letters. I left the 'M' and 'A' unedited but used contrasting fonts to still make them standout. For the first 'I', I used a lowercase form and turned the tittle into a star.  I applied envelope distort to create a wave effect for 'N'. For 'E', I used an outline with varying thickness for a collage-like feel. Lastly, I used 3D Effects for 'G' and 'I', inflate and rotate respectively.

For 'Real', I also applied the 3D effect to further emphasize that it is a tangible element. I played around with the settings to make it look as realistic as I could so it would blend better with the photos.

Initially, I wanted to use envelop distort for the rest of the text, out of shapes that follow the curves of the color splash. However, I found that it becomes illegible and after a few attempts, I decided to scrap that idea. I chose to keep the original form of the font and place them in paper cutouts .

After finishing the quote and graphic elements, I compiled everything in Photoshop to combine the quote with the photography elements. To see how it is done, click here.

Week 10 / Revision

Based on the feedback given by Mr. Hafiz, I had to change the paper cutouts to a text that follows the curves of the color splash. However, I still couldn't get the desired effect I wanted after some more attempts.

After consulting a bit more on how I should develop the quote design, I ended up with the following results:

To match with the feedback from Mr. Fauzi (DPI), I also changed the size and position of the photos and text to showcase more parts of the photography. I also changed the saturation and layering of in 'imagine' so that it still pops but doesn't stand out too much on its own.

REFLECTION

This task definitely was harder to make as there was a lot of back and forth on how the direction of the poster should be. I also had to try making the envelop distorted text multiple times and that took a lot of time too. However, I'm satisfied with how the results turned out.
