REFLECTIVE WRITING

During the first 6 weeks of learning DPI, I got to learn lots of fundamentals in design and in Adobe Photoshop. One of the first things taught was how to make good compositions. We were taught different types of compositions and how to lay out the elements in our artwork to make it look appealing. This was definitely something I need to continue to work on as I tend to ignore compositions when creating artworks.

I personally have experience working in Photoshop as I have used it for 3 years for drawing and for photo editing. Because of this, I do have some general knowledge prior to getting into this class. However, all my knowledge was self-taught which made it random and not very refined, as I never studied under a structured course.

It was great that I got to study Photoshop in a step-by-step manner as I'm able to return to some basics that I've never applied before. For example, I've never used the pen tool to select objects as I usually default to the lasso tool, or manually erase unwanted parts of a picture. I also never thought to use the mask layer in photoshop, because I would usually go for clipping masks instead. This method was definitely way more convenient and I'll be using it more in the future.

So far, I found the projects to be a lot of fun. I liked how the projects aren't fully digital and I got to be more hands-on in the creation process. Cutting out images for the physical collage and the photography session I had with my fellow peers definitely made the project more enjoyable.

Moreover, the projects challenges me to experiment with different ideas and techniques. I feel that this encouraged me to express quite a lot of my creativity and technical skills. I'm especially proud of the digital collage, as it was the project I spent the most effort in. New ideas kept popping up as I worked and seeing the collage develop to its final rendition was very satisfying.
